FACES OF HOMLESSNESS

Shannon sits cold and alone on a park bench at the downtown Corvallis skate park. Shannon suffers from both schizophrenia and alcoholism, 46% of the homeless population are reported to suffer from severe mental illness.

From left to right Kathy, Alan Knolan, Fred Corona, Lynette and Bob Brokaw with their dog Lucas, and Walter Clark in the foreground, gather under an over pass at the downtown Corvallis skate park. Tho group gathers here nearly everyday to get out from the elements, and enjoy swapping stories over cold beer.

Jeffs and his green wing macaw Rose share a moment on the downtown Corvallis waterfront. Jeffs is just one of over 600,000 of the homeless population in the United States. He, like many young homeless men and women, lost there way in life and have turned to the streets.

Mexican immigrant Ellirious, came to the United States chasing the American dream. Ellirious is just one of the estimated 38% of the homeless population that suffers from alcoholism. His beer of choice like many other homeless people, is any kind of "Malt Liquor". Malt liquor has the strongest alcohol percentage of any beer made.

Native American, and member of the Blackfoot tribe out of Montana, David stands proudly in front of what is his home. He lives on the east side of the Willamette river just outside of Corvallis city limits, on ODOT land. Just outside city limits he is out of the Corvallis police departments jurisdiction. David prefers like many homeless members of society to live outdoors, refusing to conform to societies standards.

Victor Bolden, makes an amazing sideline catch, converting a key third down conversion for another OSU first down. Despite the conversion the Beavers fell short of victory Saturday November 8th, losing  to the Washington State Cougars 39-32.

Oregon State Troopers watch as Beaver believers cheer on the home team. State Troopers are present at all Beavers home games keeping a watchful eye in and out of Reser stadium. Troopers patrol the parking lots, the stadium, and the area surrounding Reser.

Senior quarterback Sean Mannion, hands the ball off to Terron Ward who had 82 all purpose yards versus the Cougars. Mannion lead Saturdays attack with 419 passing yards. The Beavers QB has become the Pac-12's all time leading passer this season passing USC's Matt Barkley for the top spot.

Free Shoot!!!

Gunner, the not so friendly sometimes neighborhood cat roars at the sight of Toby the Labradoodle.
Toby and Gunner have a cat dog; love hate relationship that can only be seen and felt through the expression on Gunners face.

The old highway 34 bridge on a cold November morning. The bridges one lane one way design is a dying breed consisting of a historic wooden plank walkway. The wooden guardrail resembles a white picket fence, adding to its classic look.

Virginia Bottenberg, enjoys a hot cup of coffee with a friend at Dutch Brothers next door to the Beaver store. She meets with friends at Dutch Bro's twice a week for hot coffee, and hot conversation.

My Neighborhood

Rory Holmes, tries to shake off Fridays cold November morning underneath the overpass at the downtown Corvallis skate park. The skate park isn't just for kids it's a home for many underprivileged citizens forced year round to live outdoors.

Keith Cobbin, stands in the downtown Corvallis Safeway parking lot, in front of all he owns.
Cobbin regularly visits Safeway to return cans and bottles, a big part of his menial income. Keith like many homeless members of Corvallis society lives in a campground just outside of town.

Lynette Brokaw, digs through a truckload of bottles early Saturday November 1st. Her and her husband Bob live in a tent, and are just a fraction of the Corvallis homeless population. They are not alone at there campsite they're accompanied by the their dog Spike who helps keep a watchful eye on things.
